The Bassoon Song
July 29th, 2011
This is a humorous Victorian Song about a bassoon and bassoonist. It is performed by Andrew Bassey, who is the Musical Director and Conductor of Northamptonshire orchestral Winds. It is written by Quentin Ashlyn but arranged, sung and played by Andrew Bassey. Andrew has composed a bassoon part for this terrific piece and says it is more effective if the bassoonist sings as well. So I would REALLY love to do this for my senior recital, but I can’t find it anywhere. Do you know where I could locate this piece? Thanks!

i love the basson thats the reason i play it at my school and wat makes me more important playing the bassoon at my school is that i am the only kid who is playing at it and my teacher says im good at it and he never had a kid play a bassoon in his advanced band before sooooo bassoon rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@PerceptionsOfMe yeah, true. bassoon is not hard to play, it’s hard to play it well. It’s easy to learn to make the sound and move the fingers for any instrument, but listening and hearing it and making it do what you say are very difficult for any 3 of the double reed instruments (major ones) and the french horn. It really is quality of sound that makes these hard
PerceptionsOfMe
@FA22raptero Sax is actually the easiest instrument to learn. Bassoon isn’t so hard, then again it was the first instrument that I learned. I have yet to fully learn the oboe, but I have messed around on one and it’s not too bad. The only issue that I have is with treble clef. Which is an issue when I’m doing percussion stuff in marching band as well. But yeah. Little ramble about instruments. Lol.

@drumstyx6464 no, bassoon is hard

VIOLIN?

bahahahaha who says sax is the hardest? oh man…sax is SO easy by comparison to bassoon (maybe it’s because i’ve been playing alto for 8 years vs the 2 months i’ve been on bassoon
)
FA22raptero
hahahah. Yes. I hate it when people are like “sax is hardest” and it makes you want to punch them
but yes, I play oboe an bassoon, and oboe is harder for me, but I think they are all very close in difficulty

The sheet music for this seems to be out of stock everywhere! I really want to perform it with my brother in a few weeks- do you have it?
cellofellow1223
In my opinion, the third hardest to play. Hardest is oboe, second is horn.
victorrockalot
lets just say, it’s “different” to play.
shortkid2929

I buy John Pacca medium bassoon reeds. They are really good, they come in there own little pot so you can soak them

my teacher makes mine, she says that i can adjust them myself but i’m too scared considering how expensive they are! mine have a black binding and a red dot if that helps. don’t know who makes them here in australia- they are really good though

Yes, it’t the Bassoon Song by Quentin Ashlyn, republished by Jack Sprat. You’ll be able to get it from Trevco in the US and June Emerson in the UK. I have to warn you that the bassoon interjections are entirely Andrew Bassey’s and most apposite they are too.

i tried to adjust mine once, it came out aweful. but it’s all about practice. ^_^

forgot to say, theres a fantastic book that teaches you how to adjust your reeds, its really easy to use, and a great way to start scraping (the reed doctor i think) x
shmeepfairy
i use mantel reeds, baught from howarths, i like them a lot, they tend to be very reliable, and far better then begginer reeds or those from britania!

I would say Jones are the best store-bought route, but they are still not very good…
It’s best to buy them off someone who makes their own, preferably a professional.
granomuff
does anyone know the name of the composer and correct name of this piece of music?
I Love it, and i want to play it myself!!
Thanks for answers!!
